Serpentine Mortar & Pestle

This small rectangular, flat palette and conical grinder are made from the stone serpentine. They are a speckled black colour and the palette has a cartouche incised into one surface. It is said to have come from Dra Abu el Naga, near Luxor, and is, therefore, probably from a tomb. It would have been used for grinding and preparing pigment, possibly for kohl eye paint. It is very unusual. It was bought by Jeremiah Colman at Luxor. 12th Dynasty, c.1985-1795 BC.
